PETS
From visiting orangutans in Borneo to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, I’ve been writing about the animal kingdom in the national press for the past two decades – it’s my pet subject.
I’ve written regular dog-friendly travel columns for Horse and Countryside and Crufts magazines and, I enjoyed the role of editor of Real People’s weekly Animal Crackers page for seven years, my dream job. I am ably assisted in these journalistic endeavours by my Battersea rescue mutt Attlee (star of my best-selling book Phileas Dogg’s Guide to Dog-Friendly Britain) and my cat Dodger, a stray who turned up at my house 12 years ago and never left.
Other journalism work
REAL LIFE

There’s an art to writing first person real life stories – delving into sensitive issues with tact and empathy, hitting the right tone and fulfilling the editor’s demands while staying true to the interviewee’s words.
FEATURES

I relish writing in-depth features, out and about with my dictaphone speaking to people and gathering information, getting to the heart of a matter – it’s old-school, back-to-basics journalism and what I trained for at the Centre for Journalism.
My book: available in three formats
Writing Phileas Dogg’s Guide to Dog Friendly Holidays in Britain was hard work but fun too – in the weeks after publication I visited a lot of bookshops, just for the thrill of seeing it on the shelves. I’m now working on a proposal for a second book – a biography, set pre-war, of one of Britain’s most devoted animal champions – and am halfway through the first draft of a novel.
