Jane Common

Journalist & author

As seen in

I’m Jane and I write real-life stories, travel features and in-depth reports.

I’ve been a journalist for more than two decades, training at the prestigious Centre for Journalism Studies at University Wales College Cardiff before cutting my teeth in the trade press and at South West News Service. Then I became commissioning editor and chief features writer on Bauer’s fortnightly glossy magazine Real before moving into newspapers as editor of Take5, the television and lifestyle supplement of the Daily Star Sunday.

I spent a year in Istanbul as assistant editor of Time Out (English language edition) before becoming freelance. For the past five years I have edited the Animal Crackers pages of Real People – writing about pets has become a specialism, with my features on our furry friends appearing in Take a Break, The Guardian, Sunday Express, Sunday People, Best, Prima and The Independent.

My other passion is for telling people’s stories and I write regular real life features for WW magazine, Real People and The Sun on Sunday’s Fabulous magazine (print and online) as well as interviewing vintage enthusiasts for glossy interiors magazine Reclaim. Over the years, my real life pieces have also appeared in Cosmopolitan, Red, Daily Mirror and Mizz.

I’ve been writing about travel since my first press trip, 18 years ago, to Switzerland and am a regular contributor to the travel pages of the Daily Star Sunday. In 2011, my Battersea dog Attlee and I created a blog about dog-friendly travel which became, in 2014, a book – Phileas Dogg’s Guide to Dog-Friendly Travel, published by Constable and Robinson. It was the best-selling dog book on Amazon in its publication week and I have since written for The Sunday Telegraph, Waitrose Weekend, Elle, i and the Daily Express as a dog-friendly travel expert and had a regular column in Horse and Countryside and Crufts magazine.

As well as writing for consumer titles, I enjoy corporate work – I’m a regular writer for the advertorial departments of The Sun and The Times on pet-related campaigns and interviewer for more general real-life pieces.

From visiting orangutans in Borneo to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, I’ve been writing about the animal kingdom in the national press for the past two decades – it’s my pet subject.

There’s an art to writing first person real life stories – delving into sensitive issues with tact and empathy, hitting the right tone and fulfilling the editor’s demands while staying true to the interviewee’s words.

I relish writing in-depth features, out and about with my dictaphone speaking to people and gathering information, getting to the heart of a matter – it's old-school, back-to-basics journalism.

My book: available in three formats

Writing Phileas Dogg’s Guide to Dog Friendly Holidays in Britain was hard work but fun too –  in the weeks after publication I visited a lot of bookshops, just for the thrill of seeing it on the shelves. I’m now working on a proposal for a second book – a biography, set pre-war, of one of Britain’s most devoted animal champions – and am halfway through the first draft of a novel.

Frankly, I consider Jane to be the best real-life writer I have come across. Her warmth, empathy and humour put case studies at their ease, allowing her copy to be instantly relatable and engaging. It’s not the only string to her bow – she’s also an excellent all rounder be it in editorial or commercial writing – but it’s strength that flows through everything she produces. Reliable, hard-working and can-do, she will be an asset to your every campaign or project.

Samm Taylor

Creative Lead,, The Times, Sunday Times and The Sun

Jane was wonderful to work with! I run a dog rescue organisation and some of our stories are emotional and not easy to share. Jane was compassionate and patient and genuinely cares about the people and animals she writes about. She wrote a wonderful feature on Picasso the Wonky Faced Dog!

Liesl Wilhardt

Luvable Dog Rescue, Oregon

Jane is a joy to work with. She has a natural rapport with her interviewees so it’s no wonder the copy she writes crackles with life, colour, energy and humour.

Peter Knight

Head of Content, Real People

Jane’s copy is always insightful, interesting and a pleasure to read.
